Herb garden tips for beginners.
Starting a herb garden? Here's a quick guide from someone who's not a green thumb (but still keeping things alive so far!):

Position and planning.
Choose a sunny spot near the kitchen for easy access. Many herbs also grow well among vegetables. Check how tall/wide each herb grows, and whether they prefer sun or shade.
Sunlight.
Most herbs need full sun (6+ hours), but some, like parsley and mint, can thrive with just 2–3 hours of sunlight after 9am.

Soil.
Good drainage is key. Add compost and manure to clay or sandy soils to improve structure and nutrients. Herbs prefer slightly alkaline soil - add dolomite if needed.
Fertiliser.
Use a complete or organic liquid fertiliser. Mushroom compost, worm castings, and compost with chicken or cow manure also work well.

Planting.
Soak herb roots in a diluted seaweed solution before planting to reduce transplant shock. Trim any yellow or damaged leaves.
Watering.
Water thoroughly after planting. Then switch to deeper, less frequent watering to encourage strong root growth.
